So Sony finally gave us the info-dump we’ve been clamouring for and the tech press is going over the details with a fine toothed comb hoping for a clearer picture of what the PS4 means for gaming.

There are hundreds of articles about what Sony showed, but I thought I’d go the other way and write about all the things they didn’t show.

1) The Console

This has upset people more than anything else, but really, what does it matter? By not showing it they’re guaranteed hundreds more crazy mockups by artists and 3d modellers, and the hype that goes along with that. I’d put money on the design being quite a boring black box like the other Playstations!

2) Kaz Hirai

I’ve seen this spinned as Sony not having faith in the product. Which is crazy. It makes sense – Kaz used to be head of the Playstation division and his presence would risk overshadowing the people who’ve been instrumental in its development.
Or maybe he’s just sick of people making him into memes. (Riiiiiiidge Raaaacer?) He’s sure to be at E3 and It’s not as if people question Microsoft if Steve Ballmer doesn’t appear at Xbox events. (I suspect they’re actually grateful!)

3) EA

One of the biggest publishers was mysteriously absent. So Battlefield 4 was too. EA have generally supported as many platforms as humanly possible, so there’s nothing to worry about here. It’ll be great seeing what all the studios have brewing for the new specs.

4) The Last Guardian

Seriously, at what point do we get to call this vaporwear? Probably years ago.

It’s sad we haven’t met the sad looking cat/dog/bird/thing yet

5) Playstation Home

Every time an event like this happens and Home doesn’t even get a passing mention – does it hint at the impending doom of the social platform? Home didn’t even figure into the “History of Playstation” videos leading up to the event. It never became what it could’ve, and was obviously one part over ambitious, another misguided. This deserves its own article though.

6) Certain specs

We know it has an octo-core AMD64 based CPU and an obscene amount of GDDR5, but what clock speed is the CPU? Nobody should really care too much, we know its a powerhouse at this point. Standard HDD capacity? Suggested target resolution for games?

7) A full breakdown of controller functionality

They only touched on the controllers new features. A mic socket is great, do we still charge with mini USB? What is the speaker grill on the front used for? What happens when we press the settings button? No start and select? How’s that going to work with backwards compatibility? What’s the use of a move light on a dual shock? How much is rumble improved?

8) Backwards compatibility info

It was great to see that moving forward they intend to put the legacy libraries online, but that leaves us at the whim of publishers and Sony as to what they can get up. Those of us with massive disc libraries would rather not pay again for our games. It’s true that it would be impossible to emulate a PS3 in software on the PS4, but emulating the PS1 and PS2 should be no problem at all. Here’s hoping.

9) Naughty Dog

Anything they do is gold and an appearance by a new Uncharted would have pleased a lot of fans. But hey, we know they’re working on it so what’s the rush?

10) Final Fantasy Versus XIII

One day this might come out? Square Enix did say they’re working on an original game for the PS4 that they’ll show off at E3. Who knows?

11) Metal Gear Something

A metal gear announcement would have gone down well too.

12) The Price.

Lets hope they somehow get it below $500. I don’t have much faith in a reasonable UK price though unfortunately.

So, there it is, about half of the jigsaw pieces are still missing, most of it obviously withheld to keep us interested. In short it was a massive tease, and probably exactly what Sony needed to do to catch people’s interest. I’m really happy to see them concentrate on the games and the all round experience, networking etc and not hyping gimmicks this early on.

What do you think? Was there anything you thought was sorely missing, that I’ve missed?

With only five days left until the (almost certain) announcement of the Playstation 4, this photo appeared and made the rounds of Destructoid, Kotaku and everywhere else.

Business at the front. Party at the back?

Is it a prototype controller? Is the silver box a PS4 devkit? Both are very likely, but there are a host of strange things about this photo that are a little confusing. It’s fun to pick this apart, so I’m going to have a go at it.

A list of observations and questions. From the front here it looks quite “normal” but the more you think about it the stranger it gets.

1. Those sticks look really comfortable and grippy. Hopefully they appeal to fans of both convex and concave sticks.

2. The DPad looks like a possible step backwards?

3. I’m guessing that’s a Microphone on the front.

4. The blue bar on top – a motion light, like the PS:Move has. Given the rumours that player profiles can be saved to controllers, I expect each one to take on a unique colour for each player so you can tell your identical controllers apart (a fancier version of the 4 LEDs on the Dualshock3)

5. Have Start and Select buttons moved to just above the Dpad and face buttons? Is this a good idea?

6. The bulbous shape of the back, due to the position of the motion light means the whole thing is sort of fat. The L2/R2 positions are a mystery. The USB charge cable is going in at a strange angle.

7. If the front panel truly is a touchpad, which is almost certain, it seems odd that it’s glossy. It looks like the front of an 80s digital alarm clock.

8. What is that little thing/connector under the PS button? A keyboard/mic attachment like the Xbox360? Another button? Some sort of screw attachment for a new Move wand that basically makes your controller into some sort of crazy TRON axe?

Because Move wasn’t phallic enough already.

9. It looks big. Is it bigger than the Xbox360 controller?

10. This is the weirdest, most out there question…

HOW THE HELL IS IT STANDING UP LIKE THAT?!

(This has already been explained in the comments by Gamingaddict. Oops!)

Maybe the person taking the seemingly pretty candid photo set up some sort of stand to keep it upright.. Which seems a bit like too much effort considering they didn’t bother to clean the junk off the desk? Why didn’t they just prop it against the devkit? As far as I can see it’s a good few inches away from the front of the devkit!

What if this genuinely is a new shape of controller, with a third prong, like a cross between an N64 pad and.. Umm.. Some sort of sea creature?

The backside of this thing could look something like…

Not at all likely, but wouldn’t it be nice if one of the big hardware providers did anything even a bit interesting with controller chassis? They’ve not changed drastically since the SNES. Chucking in touch-pads and even screens themselves is nothing new, and just seems like packing in as much tech as possible. This (crazy?) design at least lets you do something with previously unused fingers.

What do you think? Is there anything about this controller we’re missing? Is this prototype nothing like you expect the final design to be?

2012 was a strange year for gaming. We had a small amount of new hardware and a low turnout of AAA titles. The usual hyped up console exclusives were few and far between. Looking to online and more open platforms like iOS/Android and the PC though, we can see that things have been somewhat more exciting. 2012 saw a lot of behind the scenes developments; you can see the pieces all coming into place for what should be a spectacular 2013. Here’s a somewhat Sony-centric look back at last year.

General Console

Other than the Wii U launch, and the redesigned 3DS-XL, things were quiet on the console front. It’s obvious that a large portion of developer time was being spent on next generation hardware. That’s not to say there wasn’t a lot of interesting news – it’s just been more sparse. Notably there was the launch of Halo4, which was a big deal, and proved that handing a franchise to another team needn’t be cause for worry. Otherwise exclusives have amounted to a load of JRPGs (finally) localised for the Wii, and tons of smaller, low profile games. In terms of big multiplatform releases we got Assassins Creed 3 and Far Cry 3 as well as.. Umm.. Ok, does anyone remember any killer 2012 console titles? Lollipop Chainsaw?

Maybe.. Maybe not.

Sony

Lets be honest, Sony have way more to prove in the marketplace than anyone else right now. The company’s seen some serious financial issues, after 2011′s PSN breach, the time it took the PS3 to get its legs in the market, and the public’s view of the brand as a whole let alone it’s gaming products – there are serious mountains to overcome. Sony looked like they were treading water until their big guns are loaded up, leaving us beyond interested in what the next generation will bring. We saw the release of Twisted Metal – which didn’t cause much of a stir, Starhawk (I hope someone still plays it!), Sorcery (yay?) and Playstation All Stars Battle Royale. I’m sure some would say that was a good year for exclusives. It really wasn’t. Without Uncharted, Killzone, MGS, Resistance and God Of War, third party multi-platform titles took up the slack.

The Year Sony Left Hardware out to dry.

An infuriating thing with Sony is their scattershot approach to hardware and support. Realistically they have limited resources so they can’t shoulder all the blame, but right now things don’t seem in order. Where was the Vita support? It was a really slow year for what should be a hugely successful handheld. Someone needs to release a killer app for it fast.
Likewise, Playstation Move and the Sharpshooter. When you have the best motion tech in the industry, you really should do more with it. Wonderbook (an augmented reality J.K.Rowling Potterverse spell-book) is nice, and Sports Champions 2 was necessary, but wouldn’t it have been better if Sony had encouraged more devs to include motion support? Eg: Resident Evil 6 – Capcom have had motion support in the RE series twice before, there’s no excuse not to have it here too. Far Cry 3 – aiming the weapons with the Move could be brilliant for immersion. Alas, it wasn’t to be, and I’m really beginning to question if the Move has much of a future outside of “casual” gaming.

PSN Matures and The Rise of PS+

It hasn’t all been doom and gloom though, Playstation Plus has bloomed into something I don’t think anyone would have predicted when it launched. The frankly amazing “free” game library is worth more than the price of the service. (particularly on the Vita side, where it contains a good % of the platform’s worthwhile library) Bells and whistles like automatic cloud saves and store discounts are appreciated too.
The Playstation store had a big overhaul and is much more pleasant to as a result. The content is the important thing though and following on from the Flowers and Nobi-nobi-boys of the past, things continued to get increasingly arty and experimental. Outside of the PC indy scene there’s really no better place to find refreshing, unusual experiences. Unfinished Swan, Tokyo Jungle, Papo & Yo and most notably Journey elevate the platform much more than anything the big publishers have achieved in 2012.

Microsoft

Halo 4 has been a massive, well deserved success. Otherwise, MS have manouvered their surface software for mobile and tablets to be a good companion for the 360, taking some of the sting away from the dual screen design of the Wii U. Forza Horizon was strangely under-publicized, but impressive. Microsoft were obviously working hard on Xbox3/720/Durango development. Live has seen games like Minecraft have huge success, but all over, things seem to be on hold.

Kinect was bleak too; apart from children’s, party and casual games. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though – whenever its use was anything more than supplementary in more traditional titles, the results were poor. Lets hope this year Microsoft re-affirm their commitment to more “hardcore” gaming.

Nintendo

A few well respected JRPGs came to the west in 2012, but otherwise the Wii has been quite dead (other than the yearly Just Dance releases and so-on). This obviously matters little now the Wii-U is here and all eyes are on that instead. The 3DS went from strength to strength, notably landing the best Resident Evil in years, and a much improved redesign with bigger screens and a sleeker body. Again I feel like Nintendo have secured their own little island in the industry where they can really do whatever they like without paying much attention to the other big players. Only time will tell if the WiiU comes out more as another Wii or another Gamecube though. (I wouldn’t mind either way – i prefer the Gamecube and its library to the Wii’s anyway!)

PC/Steam

Windows 8 came and went, and despite the nay-sayers – really didn’t impact much on gaming at all. Far Cry 3 showed up the dated console hardware, as did users’ continued efforts to mod games like Skyrim to unbelievable levels of polish. The Indie space has gone from strength to strength and Steam’s Greenlight has resulted in a lot of coverage for obscure smaller titles.

Kickstarter has proven to be an amazing resource for game developers. Elite: Dangerous is now on its way, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams exceeded everyone’s expectations. 2012 was a good year in PC gaming all round, but 2013 will surpass it for many reasons.

Valve’s full screen Steam interface and the news of multiple incoming “Steam Boxes” has everyone’s attention. Can a truly PC-Based, quite open (comparatively) console beat the traditional three at their own game? What about the open source Android based efforts like the Ouya?

Zombie Renaissance!

2012 had probably the two best zombie games ever released. The Walking Dead and Arma2 mod DayZ are worth mention for their incredible contributions to gaming. Both manage to stretch the medium in completely different ways (one narrative, the other in emergent gameplay and atmosphere). It’s amusing to see zombies being the central theme of two such important games. If DayZ were a standalone game in 2012 I’d be hard torn between these two for my personal game of the year. Excellent.

Community & Conclusion

Gaming culture and the public image of the medium came into the spotlight a lot in 2012. From a respectable and constant exposé of the horrors of attempting to play online as a female from sites like “Fat Ugly Or Slutty” and “Not In The Kitchen Anymore” and industry writers such as Leigh Alexander. The entitled, oppressive boys-club mentality of much of the scene has been brought to the public’s attention again and again. This can only mean progress moving forwards, as these issues are (finally) tackled head on by the community and the games’ creators themselves. Maybe there’s hope for us yet.

Then there was the controversy around the NRA, the Sandy Hook massacre and the usual scape-goating of games. I’d really rather not talk about that, it’s always too infuriating.

All in all I think 2012 was one of the most interesting years in recent memory – at least conceptually. What do you think?

It’s always sad to see a developer close up shop, but this week’s news of Sony Liverpool’s demise is a downer for anyone who enjoyed their earlier work. At their peak they were system sellers, creating games of great imagination and artistry. They deserved a better fate than this.

ORLY?!

One of the best known developers during the days of the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST, they went by the name Psygnosis. You could almost always tell one of their games from the graphics alone. Their products stood out on the shop shelves – a recognisable and classy brand for the time. Black, usually strangely sized boxes with high quality fantasy art (most notably by Roger Dean), there really isn’t a modern equivalent of them as a publisher/developer.

Shadow Of The Beast

In 1993 they were bought out by Sony, but continued to use the Psygnosis name on a number Playstation titles. Wipeout was a killer app, and met with huge commercial and critical success. Later they became “Studio Liverpool” and really didn’t get to release much more than Wipeout sequels.

Wipeout, truly ground-breaking at the time.

Psygnosis games were known for the audio-visual experience over gameplay* during the Amiga’s reign, but they were so ahead of the curve they got away with it. It was ultimately the Playstation era when their gameplay developed to a standard comparable to their art assets. It’s a shame then that they never, for whatever reason, had a chance to be as creative as they were in their earlier works.

Part of me always hoped one day we’d see what a Shadow Of The Beast game would look like on modern hardware, or what could be done with such crazy games as Microcosm or Agony with all the modern trimmings. Oh well.

Goodbye Psygnosis, Studio Liverpool.

Game Over, I guess. (Shadow Of The Beast 2)

Who’s left from the Amiga scene now? Team 17 are still going strong with previously Amiga franchises. (Worms, Alien Breed), Terramarque/Bloodhouse (now Housemarque) have had success on Sony platforms with Super Stardust, another old favourite. Even demo group Plastic have had Sony releases with Datura and Linger in Shadows. I’m having trouble thinking of more other than the giants like EA and Activision.

* Lemmings doesn’t count. Although Psygnosis published Lemmings and various other titles, they were actually developed by DMA Design – now known as Rockstar North. DMA also made Walker and Hired Guns, arguably Psygnosis’ most playable titles.

Telltale games turn their attention to zombies in an episodic adventure series based on Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead comics. Do zombies and modernized point-and-click mechanics work well together?

To those of you who haven’t read the Walking Dead, or seen the (excellent) AMC TV adaptation – It tells the stories of the scattered human population after a zombie apocalypse. The narrative focuses on the interaction between characters and how they cope with the breakdown of society. Its closest approximation is George Romero’s classics if they went on forever in a constant loop of despair, calm, fortification, introspection and disaster. Important, well-loved characters die, everyone is complex, flawed and human.

An unforgiving and disorienting backdrop, the artifice of the modern world is torn aside, making everyone either a survivor or a tasty snack. Eking out a life in this post-civilized setting is as much about making the right friends and gaining trust as it is about being well armed. It’s in this way that the concept as an adventure game really shines – keeping the characters center stage and not letting the gameplay diverge from the story, as is so common in more-action focused games (Uncharted, Skyrim). This makes for a more TV-like, impactful experience.

Gameplay

Having created modern additions to the Monkey Island and Sam & Max franchises, at first the idea of a Telltale game based on The Walking dead surprised and disappointed. The gameplay is like other adventure games but with more action and the threat of death. The game doesn’t really punish death though – you just skip back to before the encounter. This feels strange until you realize the entire experience is focused on telling a story – and that it does well. We’re desensitized to our own death in games anyway, having characters we care about dying instead is much more effective – and that is handled with unseen confidence.

At first I admit I felt like things were too “on rails” – imagine a point and click adventure with incredibly easy puzzles. Things steadily get much more interesting. You are quickly put into a lot of situations where dialogue choices seriously affect people’s opinions and actions toward you. These choices then get more panicked during timed action scenes with serious consequences. People will die – you can’t always save everyone. You rarely see games that have such divergent narrative paths – even in the teaser for the forthcoming episode it peppers in a lot of action-specific dialogue and scenes that would be irrelevant to another player’s game. You truly feel like you’re in control of the story moving forward, even though it’s only within a narrow scope it makes for a very personal experience.

And back to those “really easy” puzzles. This is only episode one, so perhaps they’ll get more complex – but even in their simplicity they all offer a lot of insight into the characters and help build the atmosphere. Finding resources and helping out your companions is important. In the few hours you’ll spend in the episode you’ll care more about these people than NPCs in many other games with 10+ hour campaigns.

Audio / Visual

Robert Kirkman has been heavily involved in the creation of the game series, and the developers passion and understanding of the source material is very apparent. The graphics are modeled to look like Charlie Adlard’s art in the comics. When characters appear in the game who we’ve previously seen in the comics they are instantly recognizable.

The simplified models and stylized surroundings allow for extremely emotive animation, completely side-stepping the usual “uncanny valley” problems. This is a game that will undoubtably age very well graphically.

The audio is another accomplishment, with moody ambient background tracks and surprisingly competent voice acting. Another touch I appreciated was the humour. Kirkman’s work has never shied away from humour in the face of adversity, characters crack sometimes awful jokes and say stupid things. One character might take this a little too far in Episode 1, but it’s generally done well.

Story

Things kick off with Lee being driven to prison in the back of a police-car. When the car crashes in a zombie related incident he must lose the cuffs and escape to safety. The rest of the chapter is fending off zombies, meeting new allies and trying to keep Lee and his friends safe.

As the story takes place earlier than the comics we get a rare glimpse of the “beginning of the end”; understandably everyone is confused (though much less inept than their TV counterparts). You’ll meet some characters from the comics too, which adds a little bit to the background lore. One thing that is so far very impressive is how characters have not been snivelling or useless. Even an eight year old you meet early on has very well thought out survival skills. Nothing breaks immersion in a horror setting more than people acting in completely inane ways, and so far they’re actually doing a better job than in the vast majority of movies.

Summary

It seems I’m gushing, but I really was that impressed. As a huge fan of horror, TWD and zombies in general (and not generally a big fan of point and click adventures) I was somewhat skeptical that Telltale could pull this off. So far it seems they have. The level of choice, the writing, the presentation – it’s all amazingly well executed. They’ve successfully identified the strengths of the source material and applied the often contradictory strengths of the the target genre to create something fresh and compelling. Bring on episode 2!

Notes: Played through episode 1 on PS3. As far as I can tell it’s identical across platforms.

I’ll get this out of the way first; I love zombie media. This article is in defence of the poor shuffling dead guys, and anyone making games featuring them. Over the past year or two we’ve seen a backlash against anything with zombies in it. There have been people calling it a fad, unoriginal, boring.

They’re wrong. Zombies hold a valuable place in gaming, and shouldn’t be so easily dismissed.

Zombies in gaming are NOT a fad.

Since the release of Left4Dead particularly, a lot of people have talked down at zombie games. Just look at the comment section on any post related to any given title. It’s true to say that until L4D’s release there had been a bit of a lull in zombie games, but they aren’t exactly new. Zombies have been around in gaming since the the mid eighties. Horror Zombies From the Crypt, Wolfenstein 3D, Zombies Ate My Neighbours, Zombie Apocalypse, Resident Evil, House Of The Dead, etc. The list is very long if you include games that involve zombies but don’t centre around them. Castlevania always has it’s fair share of the living dead, as well as any other games with a broad horror theme.

This "fad" has been going on for decades!

Now, as gaming grows it only makes sense we’ll see more of everything, so lets get this out of the way too. If zombies are a fad – how come so many zombie movies have been coming out since Romero’s original (1968) masterpiece? Many cities have yearly zombie film festivals showing at least a couple of new films alongside the classics. For whatever reason – zombies are a popular theme and they allow for a lot of interesting stories. Loss, disease, war, love, famine, pressure, madness, government interference and conspiracies, you might think zombie movies are throwaway horror, but they can cover a lot of ground. There is unarguably great of depth to the genre (if you could even call it that) and that depth can also apply to games. They’re a goldmine of story ideas which is nowhere near being exhausted in any medium.

Zombies are creatively not a lazy addition to a game.

One angle the protesters often bring up is how lazy zombies are as an enemy choice. I’ve never seen them offer reasonable alternatives, but it doesn’t take a genius to see how this is a completely bogus argument.

"They all look the same to me!"

Zombies can be incredibly varied and offer loads of creative potential for artists. Games mix things up massively when it comes to zombie body type and function. Given that there are dozens of different takes on zombies in movies alone there’s really no reason to think they would all look, behave, sound or otherwise be similar to one another in games.

From a gameplay perspective zombies are (almost) irreplaceable.

Back in the 80s games could get away with having mindless enemies piling onto you, often shooting continuously and not taking cover. Now, if you need a horde of many enemies, realistically, what are they going to be? Zombies give the designer a legitimate excuse for quite rudimentary AI – which in turn can mean larger groups of enemies. If you were to have a horde of realistic human, or even alien opponents you’d expect more intelligence, at least for the narrative side to hold up. Robots can work okay for this if they fit the game-world, but often they don’t. Sticking crappy AI on enemies like, for example the Xenos in the 2010 Aliens Vs Predator completely breaks the immersion – these are supposed to be efficient killing machines, not glitchy cannon-fodder!

Obviously there are genres where logic is thrown to the wind, or where thousands of fighters will line up to be eviscerated. Generally not in the genres that zombies feature stongly in.

Zombies as a choice for thrillers, horror games and FPSs though are a no-brainer. They enable a whole lot of experiences that would be difficult without them.

What else could have these interactions?

Zombies are flexible (and still scary)

Zombies can still be shocking, and play to various deep-seated fears. Disease, being eaten alive, social breakdown, destruction of infrastructure and communications. We’ve got cute, comical zombies, strong ones, fast ones, ranged ones.. About the only we don’t have many of is flying ones. Some games even give us gun-weilding ones. They may deviate from what many would consider zombies but lets be honest, most of the necromorphs you meet in Dead Space are just messed up zombies with a different origin story. Likewise – Silent hill is crawling with zombie-like creatures. Are those games inherently better for having slightly different creature names and backstories? Why are they suddenly exempt from the anti-zombie-brigade’s ire simply because they have different names?

Next time, before you start insulting zombies in games, think of all the good times zombies have brought you. I, for one am looking forward to playing The Last Of Us, Left4Dead 3 (you know it’s coming) Resident Evil 6, All Zombies Must Die, more COD zombies, more Dead Island and anything else besides. I’m happy that they’re not a fad and that are here to stay.
